Abstract
The purpose of this study was to outlines the essential characteristics and the genesis of
one of the fastest growing area of contemporary art- street art. Stressing the uniqueness and conditions
that make it so versatile shows how it is incorporated in the areas of the Middle East. Street
art mainly due to its presence in public space and high social engagement of artists creating it becomes
the perfect channel of expression of public sentiment. The study reveals a very dynamic
process of spreading the idea of graffiti and use of this form of expression during the course of the
Arab Spring. The description of the examples of street art as an expression of opposition to the prevailing
regimes proves that graffiti and other forms of street art can be a important tool in the fight
against oppression, and by the lack of censorship, makes it a tool accessible for almost everyone.
