Abstrakt
The development of transplanting technology of hematopoetic stem cells has been observed in the recent years. Hematopoetic stem cells can be isolated from cord blood, they are primitive cell precursors of all haemopoiesis patterns which can change into mature cells (white blood cells – CD4-t cells and CD4-b cells, monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, megakaryocytes, erythrocytes, hepatocytes). Woman at the end of her pregnancy can decide if she wants to donate her cord blood to public or private stem cells bank, or not to take any action about it which equals recycling the placenta as medical waste. The aim of the research is to establish what is the pregnant women knowledge about the donating and storing of the cord blood and to learn if they would be eager to take part in such donation. The group of fifty pregnant women in different pregnancy stage from Maternity Unit and Antenatal Classes of Nowy Targ Specialist Hospital took part in diagnostic poll between January and March 2012, as well as some pregnant women from Podhale region randomly chosen. The research prooved that women don’t have enough knowledge about donating and storing cord blood, however they do not opose to such procedure. Possible decision about the cord blood donation depands on age, education, pregnancy stage, amount of undergone pregnancies and the information source about the procedure.
