The time-honoured classical idea of the university comes under attack from two quarters: philosophical (post-modernist) and practical as new functions linked to civilisational developments enforce a turn towards instrumental thinking. The authors analyse the tasks of the university in the post-industrial society and highlight, inter alia, an important role which is played by philosophy in academic teaching in general, and not only in the humanities.
